I’ve been making yearly mixtapes around the winter holidays/new year since about 2007. Around 2014 I began making mixtapes specifically highlighting music that came out in the year in question, but these were accompanied by another CD of music I had learned of in that year, but which had been recorded in the past. In 2018, I abandoned selections from the past, and since then I’ve been focusing exclusively on songs that came out in the year that begins on 1/1 and ends on 12/31 (approximately).
